James 2:14-26 14What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works? Can faith save you? 15If a brother or sister is naked and lacks daily food, 16and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and eat your fill’, and yet you do not supply their bodily needs, what is the good of that? 17So faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead. 18 But someone will say, ‘You have faith and I have works.’ Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith. 19You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder. 20Do you want to be shown, you senseless person, that faith without works is barren? 21Was not our ancestor Abraham justified by works when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was brought to completion by the works. 23Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness’, and he was called the friend of God. 24You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. 25Likewise, was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she welcomed the messengers and sent them out by another road? 26For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead.Once again we examine James’ writing. This passage was kind of confusing, well using words I had to stop and say “What?!?”. I was confused by the “have faith but do not have works”, work to me means my 9-5 job or digging a big hole to plant a tree, unknown sweating and straining to breath because of all the “work” you’ve done. But I see one of the definitions of ‘work’ is “to prepare for use”, I can see that applying to ‘faith’. How can you have faith if you don’t know how to use it? I guess it’s like verse 16 says if someone is hungry or naked you cannot say “God loves you. Go in peace and be happy.” How can someone who has nothing to eat or no clothes feel God’s love? That person can feel it when you look at them and say “Come, eat and eat all you want, I give it to you freely.” Or “Here take my shirt or shoes, I give them to you.” It’s like the song “They will know we are Christians by our love.” If we help someone or a community we show them God’s love and how it has changed us or even saved us.
I know this is easier said than done! Sometimes you are the one who needs something and have nothing to give. I remember the Bible story of the old lady and her last coins, she freely puts them in the offering for those who need it. Or a story that saddens me and stops me to think is the one of some young children who save and save their earnings so they can give to the poor through their church’s “Christmas Fund”. And they collect, well I don’t remember the amount but let’s say $100 and they are so proud when they place it in the offering plate because they are helping some “needy” family – only to have that afternoon the pastor stop by and give the family the “Christmas Fund”. Of course the sad part is there is only $125 in it and even sadder is they didn’t feel THEY needed it, THEY weren’t poor. For someone who is “needy” or “poor” to give of their hard earned money, only to have it put back on them is sad and I’m sure the pastor didn’t mean any harm but what a slap in the face OR to have someone give their last “2 cents” because they wish to help is AMAZING to me, unselfish and gracious.
You always hear, “When times are tough or something bad has happens people come together.” That is very true but…….what about those times when nothing in particular is happening – no-one is dying, no big bad storm happened, no upheaval is going on – do we give of ourselves then. Some would say “yes” and it could be true, but many might be like me and say “well not really”. When times are good and you have money to go to a movie or out-to-eat – you go, most likely, like me, you don’t stop and say….well maybe I should give a little extra to church or the homeless shelter. It’s human nature. We’ve all been there, myself included. I wish I could say that in these bad times, when I’m barely living paycheck to paycheck that I would be willing to give up my last “2 cents” – but I know my first thought is that big bad word “bills”. I cannot bring myself “fully” to the “tithe first” approach, I’m more the “I see my bills and know they have to be paid or else” person. Maybe someday I’ll be able to “tithe first”.
It doesn’t have to be money that you give, I don’t have money to give but I have time, I have a smile, I have a shoulder for someone to cry on, or ears for someone to pour out their soul to. I have had people tell me, “your such a good person” and I wonder how? But then they look at me and say “thanks for listening”, “you probably don’t really care” and are shocked when I say “of course I care” or even those people who say “you brightened my day just by being you”. Having faith and doing “works” go hand-in-hand. If you have faith and don’t share it, what good is it? If no-one knows you are, well say, pregnant – how is anyone going to help you or be excited with you. Same with faith, if you have faith and no-one knows it – people are going to wonder what’s up with you, they have something wrong with them. They are not going to go “I want what they got”.
Give what you can, when you can – weather it be time, money, clothing, or just a smile. God is love and through you others will truly see it.
